The Goals of Our Center:
To assist in caring for the disadvantaged in our society, we at the Bo Ai Center work to allow children with cerebral palsy or other disabilities to lead healthier, more rewarding lives. Through a balance of physical and intellectual exercises, we aim to offer children the chance to improve their capabilities while expanding their capacity to sustain themselves financially.
More specifically, our center aims to
- Ensure the continuity of each child’s rehabilitation program to maintain and improve physical mobility; and
- Provide an education equal to that provided in government schools.
In expanding the horizons of these special children, we hope the center can ultimately serve to eliminate any financial burden they might otherwise lay upon their families and Chinese society as a whole.
Principle of Rehabilitation:
Cerebral Palsy is a comprehensive syndrome displaying various morbid states as a result of cerebral palsy injury caused by diverse etiologies and pathological change. It is characterized difficulty in voluntary control of the muscles accompanied by involuntary motions .
Consequently we have adopted a rigorous methodology for rehabilitation which we cater to the needs of each child. To help the children to develop their physical mobility, language, cognition and social behavior, as well as learning to attend their daily needs on their own.
Rehabilitation and Physical Mobility:
We at the Center provide physical therapy based on the principles of conductive education. This includes individual training to encourage cerebral palsy children to follow normal patterns of movement. For example, one area we focus on is helping children to improve their walking ability.
Objectives for physical rehabilitation
In accordance with best practices in conductive education, we aim to design programs that encourage children with cerebral palsy to develop improved physical coordination, joint mobility and muscle strength.
- Under the guidance of trained therapists, use specialized exercise equipment to encourage children with cerebral palsy to develop physical mobility.
- Provide appropriate physiolotherapy services catered to the needs of each of the children at the center.
Objectives for educational development:
As it often difficult for children with cerebral palsy to attend normal schools, our center strives to provide our students with the most enriching academic program possible. We aim to
- Offer children with cerebral palsy with educational opportunities equivalent to those provided by government schools
- Provide quality instruction in practical subjects such as Chinese, mathematics, music, arts & crafts, and English.
- In accordance with the principles of conductive education, design and provide programs relating to the development of physical mobility, language, cognitive skills, musical ability, vision and learning to care for themselves.
- Cater to the special needs and individual learning style of each child.
- Encourage children’s awareness of making a contribution to society and enhance their basic social skills.
Services for Parents
Our center provides parents of children with cerebral palsy access a variety of free services including lessons on how they can perform the physical therapy exercises with their children at home. In addition we have established a parent correspondence program that allows parents to exchange information about cerebral palsy with each other. We also allow parents to spend time in the center to assist in and learn about the therapy received by their child. These outreach services enable the parents to e more involved and skilled in the care and rehabilitation of their children.
